2nd Concert in 2018 season2:30 & 7:30pm
Concert Hall QPAC
There’s nothing like a classic Broadway theme to wrap up another memorable year of music-making by Queensland’s most entertaining orchestra.
There are so many evergreens in the annals of Broadway musical theatre. Stage musicals like My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, Cabaret, Fiddler on the Roof and Mamma Mia! all shot to fame – and subsequently enjoyed massive international success – on Broadway, but equally important are the magical hit movie versions they spawned. In inimitable Queensland Pops Orchestra tradition, maestro Patrick Pickett has hit on an absolute winner, drawing the very best Broadway moments from the goldmine of screen musical classics that have touched the hearts of millions around the world.
Lucy Durack is one of Australia's leading ladies of stage and screen with a list of major roles to her credit, including Glinda the Good Witch in the original Australian cast of Wicked (GPO), Kite Holloway in the feature film Now and Honey(Gristmill), and Elle Woods in Legally Blond the Musical (GFO), for which she one the both a Sydney Theatre and Helpmann Award. Lucy is currently reprising her role of Glinda in The Wizard of Oz (GFO).
After the standing ovation they received for the hugely successful Broadway & Beyond in 2017, the musical theatre craft of the superb young feature artists from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University return for a spectacular encore performance for Broadway On Screen.
These gifted young performers are truly the stars of the future. The Queensland Conservatorium continues to produce musical theatre professionals of the highest calibre – and from 2018, the QCGU offers a Bachelor of Acting course, with study across a range of genres, ensemble work, technique classes, acting for camera, industry-led workshops and public performances … no wonder this wealth of Queensland talent has been so enthusiastically and publicly embraced.
Under the expert direction of the Head of Performing Arts Associate Professor Paul Sabey and Vocal Coach Trevor Jones, the QPO/QCGU’s magnificent Jesus Christ Superstar finale marked a new high for all involved in 2017 – hit after hit, the talent on display was breathtaking, and the Pops audiences responded in kind.
Experience the thrill of the greatest musical theatre songs ever written – forever young, thanks to the magic of the silver screen. Relive all those golden movie moments as Patrick Pickett and the Queensland Pops Orchestra take you on a star-studded journey of Broadway screen greats, brought to life by passionate young performers who give their absolute all.
QPAC has a long tradition of staging some of Broadway’s most outstanding musicals, and we hope the Queensland Pops Orchestra’s Broadway on Screen stirs some truly wonderful memories as we celebrate the Broadway movie genre at its immortal best.
