    New Year's Eve Gala Concert

    6pm & 9:30pm

    New Year's Eve 2015

Cherin LeeBrisbane music lovers, the countdown is on! ‘Holiday’ and ‘celebrate’ are the words de jour for the Queensland Pops Orchestra’s 2015 New Year’s Eve Gala concert, which assures you a first-class ticket on an exhilarating and entertaining musical journey to usher in 2016 – and another year of magic music making.

Along for the ride is a stellar line-up of some of Australia’s most revered artists: special guest stars Silvie Paladino, Jason Barry-Smith and Cherin Lee will delight with a superb line-up of songs, arias and violin masterpieces from the greatest composers of opera, musical theatre and popular classical music. Conductor/Music Director Patrick Pickett CSM will present both traditional and exciting new repertoire in this New Year’s Eve programme – a much-anticipated annual event for which the ever-popular Queensland Pops Orchestra has been so warmly embraced for more than thirty wonderful years.

Silvie Paladino wowed audiences at her last appearance with the Pops, showcasing the greatest West End and Broadway musicals of our time in one of the most acclaimed Pops concerts ever, Broadway Spectacular, in 2013. One of Australia’s most versatile and talented entertainers, Silvie has performed throughout Australasia and London’s West End, starring in some of the world’s most successful musicals. Silvie has played lead roles in Les Miserables, Cats, Miss Saigon and Mamma Mia!, and won a Green Room Award (and a Helpmann nomination) for her role in Chess.

Silvie has appeared nationally with her own show, toured with Patrizio Buanne, and performed with celebrated theatre composers Stephen Schwartz and Stephen Sondheim. She is well known to Australian audiences through her regular TV appearances on Carols By Candlelight, and her recordings Silvie Paladino Sings Streisand, Silvie Paladino – Christmas and On My Own.

Joining Silvie in the scene-stealing stakes is one of Brisbane’s best-loved and gifted performing artists, the one and only Jason Barry-Smith. Jason is renowned for his ability to shift seamlessly from the greatest baritone arias from classical opera and musical theatre to comedic roles in light opera and operetta – he has performed in some of Opera Queensland’s most successful productions, including Cinderella, Cosi fan tutte, The Magic Flute, The Mikado, Romeo & Juliet and La bohéme. Other Opera Queensland plaudits include his title roles in both Don Giovanni and The Barber of Seville and celebrated roles in The Pirates Of Penzance for Essgee Entertainment.

A recipient of Opera Foundation Australia’s Italian Opera Award, Jason has performed internationally from Wellington to Tokyo to Belfast, and closer to home appears regularly in major productions for both the Brisbane Biennial Festival of Music and the Brisbane Festival.

Virtuoso violinist Cherin Lee completes this triptych of talent, adding the ‘wow’ factor to this spectacular New Year’s Eve celebration concert. At the tender age of 13, Cherin has won countless prestigious awards for performing excellence, notably the 2014 English Family Prize for Young Instrumentalists, which entitled her to perform the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. At the ages of 10 and 11, Cherin was awarded back-to-back Distinctions for both AMusA and LMusA in violin. Most recently, Cherin led the Somerville House Chamber Orchestra on its highly successful 2014 European tour, performing many solos in various cities across Europe. Cherin was awarded a scholarship for her outstanding talents, and is currently in Grade Nine at Brisbane’s Somerville House.

An orchestra that loves the music it plays – and the absolute joy it brings – is what makes the Queensland Pops Orchestra such a vital, integral part of the Queensland performing arts scene. Maestro Patrick Pickett, his loyal artistic and technical support staff, the outstanding specialist artists, and the dedicated players that comprise this wonderful orchestra invite you to sit back and be thrilled by another unforgettable night of colourful, superlative music, performed as only the Queensland Pops Orchestra can. Come and join the Pops for a very Happy New Year 2016!
